Louisville Jazz at its Best
Pure Imagination (Bonavita Records)
Deborah Sachs has imagination. You can hear it in her lyrics and her singing.
This debut release from a native Louisvillian, now living in Southern California, is full of warm sounds. Deborah’s voice is rich and nimble, bouncing off of each word. Not only has she assembled a good mix of standards and original songs, she has chosen some of Louisville’s musical pride with players such as Todd Hildreth, Tyrone Wheeler, Darryel Cotten, Sonny Stephens, Craig Wagner, Jacob Duncan, and Chris Noga.
Her arrangements and original compositions show a real understanding of the jazz idiom. Melodie Unheard is a perfect example of Deborah’s skillful use of literary references in a subtle way. Every note and harmony is clear and carefully placed to achieve an ethereal and otherworldly effect – something from the imagination.
Cowboy Junkie is another original song that bounces and swings, with infectious plays on words. It was also a winner in the Canadian website Sky Jazz’s weekly favorite artist poll in late November.

“A jazzy lady with a knack for word play has a nice debut under her belt with this eclectic set that covers several bases and takes you around a few horns. Nicely engaging in an easy going way, it’s overall lightly swinging vibe is the kind of thing that helps make summer last a little longer than it’s 9/21 shelf date. Fun stuff that adds up to a nice find.”
Pure Imagination, the debut CD from Louisville songwriter Deborah Sachs, is an intimate snapshot of her considerable vocal talent and rich inner life. Standouts in this collection of originals and arrangements are the jazz waltz, Open Wide and the medley of Singing in the Rain and Laughter in the Rain, set to a sensual Bossa nova groove.
Ravishing support throughout comes from a virtuoso rhythm section—especially the keyboard work from session leader, Todd Hildreth. Together, this singer and combo will draw you inside a musical labyrinth of ESCAPIST Jazz, Blues and Swing tunes and rhythms. Is the music delicate, intimate & lilting or swinging and sassy? YES to all of the above.
